Purpleheart: Colour, Grain and Woodworking Applications

Purpleheart is an exotic hardwood selected for its naturally distinctive purple colour. It makes a strong statement as an accent wood, especially against pale domestic hardwoods.
How Purpleheart Looks
Colour can differ substantially between a freshly cut surface, a finished surface and wood exposed to light over time. Do not assume every board will show an identical shade; a test sample is the best way to choose a finishing approach.
What Can You Make With Purpleheart?
Purpleheart is often used for boxes, decorative panels, turning projects, small furniture details and striking mixed-species pieces. It is especially useful when a relatively small amount of wood should create strong visual contrast.
- Inlay and decorative accent stock
- Small boxes and lids
- Turning and carving projects
- Contrasting furniture details
Machining and Preparing Purpleheart
Purpleheart is dense, which can make cutting and routing harder than with softer domestic species. Use sharp tooling, controlled feeds and secure workholding. Avoid excessive friction at the cutter and expect additional care when machining tight profiles.
Finishing Purpleheart
Apply a test finish and observe the piece over time before promising a specific final shade. Purple colour can evolve with age and exposure, and a coating will influence the way it appears. Consistent sanding helps avoid uneven reflections.
Choosing Purpleheart Stock for a Project
Canadian product listings include 4/4 and 8/4 lumber, five-packs and project blanks. Choose the dimensions that fit your final part; for mixed-species glue-ups, plan for a matching finishing process rather than treating all woods identically.
When comparing boards and packs, check each product's listed thickness, actual dimensions and preparation. Plan the finished cut list before ordering, and leave a sensible allowance for trimming, surfacing and grain matching. Product photographs illustrate the character of the species; natural grain and colour vary between individual boards.
