Wenge: Colour, Grain and Woodworking Applications

Wenge is a very dark hardwood with a distinctive coarse grain and near-black streaks. It works particularly well when a project needs an espresso-coloured contrast rather than a stained imitation of dark wood.
How Wenge Looks
The open pores and alternating dark lines form a prominent texture. Select boards with the pattern in mind, especially when making small parts where a dark stripe could dominate the entire face of the piece.
What Can You Make With Wenge?
Use Wenge for dramatic furniture accents, box components, trim, handles and smaller turned objects. Because it is dense and visually strong, it can be effective as a secondary species alongside lighter domestic hardwoods.
- Decorative contrast strips and panels
- Boxes and furniture accents
- Handles and shaped accessories
- Turned projects and display objects
Machining and Preparing Wenge
Wenge is challenging to machine cleanly because of its density and interlocked grain. Sharp cutters, smaller passes and careful workholding help with routing and planing. Splinters can be sharp; use sensible hand protection when handling rough stock and appropriate dust extraction when working it.
Finishing Wenge
A clear finish can deepen the dark tones, while an inappropriate filler or a light-coloured compound may stand out in the pores. Make a finish sample and inspect it under the lighting where the finished piece will be used.
Choosing Wenge Stock for a Project
The Canadian assortment includes 4/4 and 8/4 lumber and prepared five-packs. Check dimensions, surfaces and the number of boards in each product listing. Decide on the visible grain orientation before cutting small accent pieces from a larger board.
When comparing boards and packs, check each product's listed thickness, actual dimensions and preparation. Plan your finished cut list before ordering and allow for trimming, surfacing and grain matching. Product photographs illustrate the character of the species; natural grain and colour vary between individual boards.
