Aromatic Cedar Lumber: Appearance, Uses and Woodworking Tips

Shopping from Canada? This Aromatic Cedar collection is available for shipping across Canada.

Aromatic Cedar stands out for its reddish colour, modest grain, and distinctive fragrance. It is especially attractive when a project benefits from both visual warmth and the character of aromatic wood.

Colour and Grain in Aromatic Cedar

Colour varies across heartwood and lighter areas, and the fresh-cut scent is part of the appeal. It can suit cedar-lined storage pieces, boxes, display items, and smaller decorative projects where you want a naturally recognisable material.

What Can You Make With Aromatic Cedar?

Think about Aromatic Cedar when building drawer linings, small chests, keepsake boxes or accent pieces. The light weight and scent can be advantages, but they do not replace careful construction or appropriate storage and finishing.

Working With Aromatic Cedar

Cedar is generally approachable with sharp tools, although narrow pieces can split if fasteners are driven too close to an edge. Predrill small holes when necessary and support workpieces during cutting or planing.

Finishing and Care

For projects where fragrance matters, decide in advance whether a coating is desirable; a fully sealed surface will change how much aroma is noticeable. Test any finish on a spare piece, particularly if you are trying to preserve the natural colour.

Choosing the Right Aromatic Cedar Lumber

Look at 4/4 versus 8/4 boards and five-packs, then choose the size that suits your panel or box components. Check the listing for surfacing, pack quantity and actual dimensions before planning joinery.

Choose stock based on the finished part rather than the nominal label alone. Check the product page for exact dimensions, preparation, available variants and current stock. Allow enough material for trimming, joinery and grain matching; combining shorter boards can also be useful for smaller components.
