A note on sizing: This build is written to the minimum board width in your pack. Boards run 4"–6" wide — if/when yours come in wider, you've got extra material to work with; the instructions below just don't account for it. Scaling the cut list up is on you.

(Surfaced 4 Sides) — No Jointing Needed

  1. 1From one board, crosscut a 9" back panel; angle-cut the top corners at 15°.
  2. 2From the same board, crosscut a 6" base plate, a 2" ledge, and 2 cleats @ 3".
  3. 3Glue and brad-nail the ledge and cleats to the back panel.
  4. 4Repeat for all 5 boards — each one makes a complete stand.
  5. 5Sand smooth and finish as preferred. All 5 boards used, 5 stands, 0 spare.

(Surfaced 2 Sides) — Jointing Required

  1. 1Joint one edge of all 5 boards for a square reference edge.
  2. 2From one board, crosscut a 9" back panel using the jointed edge as reference.
  3. 3From the same board, crosscut a 6" base plate, a 2" ledge, and 2 cleats @ 3".
  4. 4Glue and brad-nail the pieces together into a complete stand.
  5. 5Repeat for all 5 boards, sand, and finish as preferred. All 5 boards used, 5 stands, 0 spare.

Why This Build Uses Zero Spare Material

Each 24" board splits into a 9" back panel, a 6" base plate, a 2" ledge, and two 3" side cleats — that's 9+6+2+3+3 = 23" of a 24" board, used by every single board in the pack. Five boards go in, five complete stands come out, and there's nothing left over to store or throw away.

Frequently Asked Questions

S4S (Surfaced 4 Sides) boards are ready to cut straight away — follow the S4S column. S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) boards still have one rough edge, so you joint one edge flat first, then follow the S2S column, which uses that jointed edge as your reference for every cut.

The cut list scales with your board width — the project size is expressed as a range (W=4-6") so wider boards are used to their full width rather than trimmed away. A 4" board gives you a 4" stand; a 6" board gives you a 6" stand. Either way, all 5 boards are fully used with 0 spare, maximizing the wood you paid for.

Yes — any 4/4 Standard 2ft pack works, including exotics like Purpleheart, Padauk, or Canarywood. One note: exotic species currently aren't available for shipment to US customers.

Exactly 5 — one stand per board, with zero spare material. Each 24" board splits into a 9" back panel, 6" base plate, 2" ledge, and two 3" cleats (23" used of the 24" board).

Only if your pack is S2S. S4S packs need no jointing at all. If you're not sure which you have, check your pack listing — S4S is called out specifically.

Whatever you prefer — stain, oil, or a clear topcoat all work well here. The build doesn't call for a specific finish, so it's a good project for trying a new one.

No — this design is sized specifically for the 2ft pack's 24" board length. A 4ft pack would leave a lot of unused material per board.
