A note on sizing: This build is written to the minimum board width in your pack. Boards run 4"–6" wide — if/when yours come in wider, you've got extra material to work with; the instructions below just don't account for it. Scaling the cut list up is on you.

If you've ever bought more lumber than a project actually needed, this is the build we designed to fix that. Our Serving Tray with Rails uses every board in a 4/4 Standard 2ft pack to build one complete tray — three boards glue up into the base, and the remaining two become the mitred rail frame around it, handle cutouts included.
The design works whether your pack is S4S (Surfaced 4 Sides) or S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) — S4S boards go straight to glue-up with no jointing needed, while S2S boards get one extra step (jointing a reference edge) before the same cut list applies.

(Surfaced 4 Sides) — No Jointing Needed
- 1Glue 3 boards together for the bottom.
- 2After glue has dried, cut to 20" length and 11.25" width.
- 3Rip rails to 2" wide from the last 2 boards.
- 4Cut rails to length with mitred corners (2 Long & 2 Short).
- 5Cut handle cutouts in the short pair.
- 6Glue and clamp the rails around the base.
- 7Sand smooth and apply food-safe finish.
- 8All 5 boards used, 0 spare.
For Customers with S2S Lumber Pack
(Surfaced 2 Sides) — Jointing Required
- 1Joint one edge of all 5 boards to create a straight, square reference edge.
- 2Glue 3 boards edge-to-edge, joint one wide face flat, then trim to 11.25" x 20".
- 3Rip the last 2 boards to 2" wide rails (using the jointed edge as reference).
- 4Cut rails to length with mitred corners (2 Long & 2 Short).
- 5Cut handle cutouts in the short pair.
- 6Glue and clamp the rails around the base.
- 7Sand and apply food-safe finish.
- 8All 5 boards used, 0 spare.
Why This Build Uses Zero Spare Material
Every board in the pack has a job: three boards glue up into the 11.25" x 20" base, and the last two are ripped into rail strips that frame it on all four sides, mitred at the corners with handle cutouts in the short pair. Five boards in, one complete serving tray out — nothing left over to store or throw away.
Frequently Asked Questions
S4S (Surfaced 4 Sides) boards are ready to cut straight away — follow the S4S column. S2S (Surfaced 2 Sides) boards still have one rough edge, so you joint one edge flat first, then follow the S2S column, which uses that jointed edge as your reference for every cut.
Unlike some of our builds, this tray uses a fixed base size — during glue-up, the combined panel is trimmed down to exactly 11.25" x 20" regardless of how wide your boards run (4"–6"). Extra width just comes off in that trimming step; it doesn’t change the rail dimensions, board count, or finished tray size.
Yes — any 4/4 Standard 2ft pack works, including exotics like Purpleheart, Padauk, or Canarywood. One note: exotic species currently aren't available for shipment to US customers.
Exactly 1 — this build is different from our board-by-board projects. All 5 boards go into a single tray: 3 boards form the glued-up base, and the remaining 2 are ripped into the rail strips that frame it. Zero spare material, one finished tray.
Only if your pack is S2S. S4S packs need no jointing at all. If you're not sure which you have, check your pack listing — S4S is called out specifically.
Since this tray will be in contact with food, use a food-safe finish — a food-grade mineral oil, a butcher-block/board oil blend, or a food-safe beeswax finish all work well. Avoid finishes that aren't rated food-safe, since this isn't just a display piece.
No — this design is sized specifically for the 2ft pack's 24" board length, which is what allows the base and rails to come together at 20" and 11.25". A 4ft pack would leave a significant amount of unused material per board.
