Three-tier hanging shelves for trailing plants, hung on natural rope from a single ceiling hook. Each set has two wide lower shelves and a narrow top shelf, held level by simple knots under every corner. One 4ft pack makes two sets — one for a sunny window and one for a corner that needs some green.

S4S or S2S? S4S boards arrive flat and square on all four sides — cut and build. S2S boards have rough edges you straighten first, and finish ⅞" thick instead of ¾". No jointer? Choose S4S.
Our sizing assumptions: ⅛" per saw cut · S4S boards 23½"/47½" long with ¼" to square an end, 4" wide, ¾" thick · S2S boards trimmed ½" each end and ¼" off each rough edge (3½" clean), ⅞" thick · sizes drawn for the narrowest board in the pack. Wider boards give you a bigger offcut or a wider part — never a shortage.

Step-by-Step

✓
S4S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 4 sides — no jointing

  1. 1 Sort the boards. Boards 1–4 make the four lower shelves (two per set), and board 5 gives the two narrow top shelves. Pair boards with similar colour for each glue-up.
  2. 2 Cut the shelves. Clamp a stop block at 22" and crosscut every board into two pieces — 10 pieces in all.
  3. 3 Glue up the lower shelves. Edge-glue the board 1–4 pieces in pairs into four shelves, 22" × 8". Keep the ends flush and the faces level. Clamp, scrape the squeeze-out once rubbery, and leave overnight.
  4. 4 Round the corners. Trace a coin or a jar lid on each corner, cut to the line and sand smooth. Sand everything 120 → 180 → 220 and ease every edge.
  5. 5 Drill the rope holes. Mark a hole 1" in from both edges at every corner of every shelf. Drill ⅝" holes straight through, with a scrap clamped underneath to stop tear-out. Use the first shelf as a template for the rest so the holes line up.
  6. 6 Finish. Wipe-on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats. Plant pots drip, so coat the top faces well.
  7. 7 Prepare the rope. Cut four 10 ft lengths and wrap tape around each end so it doesn't fray. For each set, fold two ropes in half over a temporary hook. One rope's legs feed the two left-end holes, the other rope's legs the two right-end holes.
  8. 8 Thread and knot. Slide the narrow top shelf up the four legs to about 18" below the hook. Tie an overhand knot under each hole so the shelf sits level. Thread a wide shelf on, slide it up to 11" below the top shelf and knot it the same way. Repeat for the bottom shelf. Check level with a small level and nudge the knots before pulling them tight. Trim the tails to 3" and tape or whip the ends.
  9. 9 Hang it. Find a ceiling joist. Pre-drill and screw in a ceiling hook rated for 50 lb or more, into the centre of the joist — never into drywall alone. Or use a wall bracket rated 50 lb+ screwed into a stud. Load each set with about 15 lb in total.

S2S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 2 sides — straighten edges first

  1. 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish ⅞" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
  2. 2 Sort the boards. Boards 1–4 make the four lower shelves (two per set), and board 5 gives the two narrow top shelves. Pair boards with similar colour for each glue-up.
  3. 3 Cut the shelves. Clamp a stop block at 22" and crosscut every board into two pieces — 10 pieces in all.
  4. 4 Glue up the lower shelves. Edge-glue the board 1–4 pieces in pairs into four shelves, 22" × 7". Keep the ends flush and the faces level. Clamp, scrape the squeeze-out once rubbery, and leave overnight.
  5. 5 Round the corners. Trace a coin or a jar lid on each corner, cut to the line and sand smooth. Sand everything 120 → 180 → 220 and ease every edge.
  6. 6 Drill the rope holes. Mark a hole 1" in from both edges at every corner of every shelf. Drill ⅝" holes straight through, with a scrap clamped underneath to stop tear-out. Use the first shelf as a template for the rest so the holes line up.
  7. 7 Finish. Wipe-on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats. Plant pots drip, so coat the top faces well.
  8. 8 Prepare the rope. Cut four 10 ft lengths and wrap tape around each end so it doesn't fray. For each set, fold two ropes in half over a temporary hook. One rope's legs feed the two left-end holes, the other rope's legs the two right-end holes.
  9. 9 Thread and knot.
  10. 10 Hang it. Find a ceiling joist. Pre-drill and screw in a ceiling hook rated for 50 lb or more, into the centre of the joist — never into drywall alone. Or use a wall bracket rated 50 lb+ screwed into a stud. Load each set with about 15 lb in total.
Why knots under every hole? Each knot is a small stop the shelf sits on. Four knots at the same height hold the shelf level, and you can slide a knot up or down to adjust before you pull it tight.
Why is the top shelf narrower? The ropes come together at the hook, so they get closer near the top. A narrow top shelf sits inside that taper, and the holes line up with the ropes' natural angle.
Why into a joist? A full set with wet soil can pull hard on a single point. Drywall alone can tear out. A hook screwed into the centre of a joist holds many times the load.

Make It Yours

  • Macrame look: add a decorative gathering knot just below the hook.
  • Different spacing: set the bottom tier lower for a tall trailing plant — the knots make it easy.
  • Wall bracket: hang the set from a rated wall bracket into a stud, beside a window or above a desk.

Safety and Care

  • Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
  • Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
  • Hang only from a ceiling joist or a rated bracket into a stud, rated 50 lb or more. Keep each set to about 15 lb in total.
  • Hang it where nobody walks into it, and out of reach of children and pets who might pull on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.

About 15 lb per set in total — a few small potted plants with saucers. The rope and knots hold more; the limit is a safe load on one ceiling hook and the wood around the holes.

Not if the knots are level. Load the plants evenly from side to side, and adjust a knot if a shelf sits off level.

⅜" natural cotton, jute or manila rope. Cotton is soft and bright; jute and manila look rustic. Avoid slippery nylon — the knots can creep.

Planned offcuts only: about 3" off the end of every board. All 5 boards go into the shelves.

Yes. A 2ft pack makes one set: cut each board to 22", glue boards 1–2 and boards 3–4 into the two lower shelves, and use board 5 as the top shelf.
