A short picture ledge for the spots a long shelf won't fit: a hallway, a bathroom, beside a door, or low down as a book ledge for a kid's room. Each ledge is three simple parts: a bottom, a back that covers the bottom's rear edge, and a front lip to stop frames sliding off. One 2ft pack makes two.

  • S2S only: jointer, straight-line rip jig or hand plane
S4S or S2S? S4S boards arrive flat and square on all four sides — cut and build. S2S boards have rough edges you straighten first, and finish ⅞" thick instead of ¾". No jointer? Choose S4S.
Our sizing assumptions: ⅛" per saw cut · S4S boards 23½"/47½" long with ¼" to square an end, 4" wide, ¾" thick · S2S boards trimmed ½" each end and ¼" off each rough edge (3½" clean), ⅞" thick · sizes drawn for the narrowest board in the pack. Wider boards give you a bigger offcut or a wider part — never a shortage.

Step-by-Step

✓
S4S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 4 sides — no jointing

  1. 1 Sort the boards. Boards 1 and 3 are the bottoms, boards 2 and 4 are the backs, board 5 makes the front lips. Put the best faces on the backs and the tops of the bottoms.
  2. 2 Cut to length. Square one end of boards 1–4, then cut each to 22". Clamp a stop block so all four match.
  3. 3 Rip the lips. Rip two 1¼" strips off board 5 with a push stick, then cut both to 22". The leftover strip is a spare lip.
  4. 4 Sand. Sand every part 120 → 180 grit before assembly. Ease the top edge of each lip and the top corners of each back.
  5. 5 Attach the back. Stand a back behind a bottom so it covers the bottom's rear edge, bottoms flush. Glue the edge, clamp, and drive #8 × 1¼" screws through the back into the bottom, one every 6". Pre-drill and countersink each one.
  6. 6 Glue on the lip. Glue a lip on edge along the front of the bottom, flush with the front edge. It stands 1¼" tall and stops frames sliding off. Clamp or tape it until dry. All three parts run grain the same way, so wood movement is not an issue.
  7. 7 Repeat. Build the second shelf the same way. Let the glue cure overnight.
  8. 8 Finish. Final sand at 220 grit, then 2–3 coats of wipe-on oil or water-based poly.
  9. 9 Hang it. Find the studs. They sit 16" apart, so a 22" ledge reaches two if you centre it over a stud bay. Level the ledge and drive one #10 × 2½" screw through the back into each stud, plus a third in the middle with a rated anchor. Pre-drill the back first.

S2S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 2 sides — straighten edges first

  1. 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish ⅞" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
  2. 2 Sort the boards. Boards 1 and 3 are the bottoms, boards 2 and 4 are the backs, board 5 makes the front lips. Put the best faces on the backs and the tops of the bottoms.
  3. 3 Cut to length. Square one end of boards 1–4, then cut each to 22". Clamp a stop block so all four match.
  4. 4 Rip the lips. Rip two 1¼" strips off board 5 with a push stick, then cut both to 22".
  5. 5 Sand. Sand every part 120 → 180 grit before assembly. Ease the top edge of each lip and the top corners of each back.
  6. 6 Attach the back. Stand a back behind a bottom so it covers the bottom's rear edge, bottoms flush. Glue the edge, clamp, and drive #8 × 1½" screws through the back into the bottom, one every 6". Pre-drill and countersink each one.
  7. 7 Glue on the lip. Glue a lip on edge along the front of the bottom, flush with the front edge. It stands 1¼" tall and stops frames sliding off. Clamp or tape it until dry. All three parts run grain the same way, so wood movement is not an issue.
  8. 8 Repeat. Build the second shelf the same way. Let the glue cure overnight.
  9. 9 Finish. Final sand at 220 grit, then 2–3 coats of wipe-on oil or water-based poly.
  10. 10 Hang it. Find the studs. They sit 16" apart, so a 22" ledge reaches two if you centre it over a stud bay. Level the ledge and drive one #10 × 2½" screw through the back into each stud, plus a third in the middle with a rated anchor. Pre-drill the back first.
Why does the back cover the bottom's edge? The screws go through the back into the bottom's edge, and the back carries the screws into the wall. The load hangs on the back, not on a glue line.
Why pre-drill? Maple, oak and hickory split if you drive a screw without a pilot hole. Pre-drill every screw and countersink so the heads sit flush.

Make It Yours

  • Picture groove: rout a ¼" groove along the top of the bottom, just behind the lip. Frames sit in it and can't slide forward.
  • Kids' book ledge: hang it at 24–30" so books face out at their eye level.
  • Two-tone: walnut ledge with a maple lip.

Safety and Care

  • Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
  • Rip the 1¼" lips with a push stick or on a bandsaw — never hold a narrow strip by hand near the blade.
  • Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
  • Mount into wall studs (or rated anchors sized for the load). Check for wires and pipes before drilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.

Plenty for framed photos, small plants or a row of books, about 15 lb spread along the ledge when two screws are in studs. Don't use it as a coat hook or a step.

Use the studs if you can. If you can't hit two, use three rated anchors sized for the load and keep the weight light.

The lip stands 1¼" above the shelf, which holds most frames. For thin frames on a busy wall, add the picture groove from Make It Yours.

Planned offcuts only: about 1" off the end of each board and a thin strip from board 5 (on S4S it's a full spare lip). All 5 boards go into the ledges.

Yes. With a 4ft pack you get two long 46" ledges instead — we have a separate plan for that, with the same three parts.
