Chunky Coat Rack[8/4 · 4ft · 5-Pack]
One pack. One build. All 5 boards used. • Makes 5 coat racks
*Exotic — not available for shipment to US customers.
A thick, solid hardwood coat rack with six angled pegs. There is almost nothing to cut: square the ends, round the edges, drill six holes and glue in the pegs. Every board in the pack becomes one rack, so one 4ft pack outfits the front hall, the mudroom, the bedrooms and the cottage.

Step-by-Step
- 1 Pick the fronts. Look over each board and mark the best face as the front and the best edge as the top. Each board becomes one rack.
- 2 Cut to length. Square one end of each board, measure 46", and cut the other end square.
- 3 Ease the edges. Round or chamfer the front edges and both ends with a ¼" bit, or sand them soft. Sand the front and ends 120 → 180 → 220.
- 4 Mark the pegs. Draw a line along the front at 2" from the top edge. Mark peg centres on it at 5½", 12½", 19½", 26½", 33½", 40½" from the left end — six pegs, 7" apart.
- 5 Make a 10° drill guide. Cut the end of a scrap block at 10°, then drill straight through it. Clamp it on each mark so the bit enters angled up toward the top edge. A drill press with a tilted table works too.
- 6 Drill the peg holes. For Shaker pegs, drill ½" holes 1" deep. For dowel pegs, drill 1" holes 1¼" deep with a Forstner bit. Wrap tape on the bit as a depth stop.
- 7 Glue in the pegs. For dowel pegs, cut 4" pieces and round the outer end. Glue each peg into its hole with the peg pointing up. The peg's long grain glues to the side of the hole — a strong joint.
- 8 Finish. Wipe on oil or hardwax oil, two or three coats, before you hang the rack.
- 9 Drill the mounting holes. Find the studs and mark three on the wall (46" spans three studs at 16" centres). Transfer them to the rack, 1" below the top edge. Drill a ⅜" counterbore ½" deep, then a clearance hole for a #10 screw.
- 10 Hang it. Level the rack on the wall, pre-drill into the studs, and drive #10 × 3½" screws. Glue ⅜" wood plugs into the counterbores, trim flush and touch up the finish.
- 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish 1¾" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.

Make It Yours
- Mixed pegs: walnut pegs on a maple rack, or the other way round.
- Shelf on top: screw a 4/4 board on the top edge for hats and gloves.
- Kids' height: hang one rack at 36" so the kids can reach their own hooks.
Safety and Care
- Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
- Mount into wall studs (or rated anchors sized for the load). Check for wires and pipes before drilling.
- Clamp the rack to the bench when drilling the peg holes — a 1" Forstner bit grabs.
- Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.
Screwed into three studs, the rack itself is much stronger than the pegs. Each glued peg holds a heavy winter coat and a bag without trouble.
Shaker pegs look classic and need small ½" holes. Dowel pegs are cheaper and chunkier, and match the thick board. Both are glued in.
Use the two studs you can reach, and a rated heavy-duty anchor for the third screw. Never hang it on drywall anchors alone.
Planned offcuts only: about 1" off the end of each board. All 5 boards become racks.
Yes. A 2ft pack makes five 22" racks with three pegs each, centres 7" apart starting 4" from the end. 22" spans two studs at 16" centres.
