Our story
We Started As
Furniture Builders.

We started as a small retail and furniture studio in Hamilton, Ontario — designing and building pieces by hand. To build well, we needed hardwood we could count on.

When we couldn't find the consistency we wanted, we began sourcing and selecting it ourselves. Out of the workshop came the lumber side — naturally.

We still run a full furniture shop today and we still hand-select every board the same way we select our own stock. Whether you're a professional or just getting started, your materials should make you feel excited to build — not overwhelmed.

What serious builders make with 8/4 Black Walnut

Built to Last.
What Will You Make?

8/4 Black Walnut is for builds that need real mass and presence. Here's what experienced woodworkers are creating — and what they say about working with it.

🪑
Dining Tables & Thick Tops

Dining table tops, thick bench seats, live edge slabs, statement coffee tables. 8/4 gives you the mass and depth that 4/4 simply can't match.

"The wood was perfect for our dining table top. Grain is incredible — exactly what I was hoping for." — William H.
Thick Black Walnut cutting board blanks — end grain build
🔪
Thick Blanks & End Grain

End grain cutting boards, thick charcuterie slabs, butcher block inserts. 8/4 gives you the depth to create boards that are as functional as they are stunning.

"Beautiful wood. Extremely dense as expected. Looks incredible as end grain cutting boards." — Glenn R.
Black Walnut floating shelf — structural furniture build
🏛️
Legs, Aprons & Structural Work

Table legs, bench aprons, thick drawer fronts, floating shelves with real mass. 8/4 handles the structural demands of serious furniture — and looks stunning doing it.

"Beautiful graining, no need to do any prep work other than a light sanding. Ideal for visual pieces." — Keith R.

Why serious builders choose Knotty over local

Not What You Find
At Home Depot.

Big box stores rarely carry true 8/4 hardwood — and when they do, the selection, drying, and surfacing don't come close. Here's what our customers say:

"Unlike Home Depot or Lowe's, these boards were straight as, you guessed it, a board! The exact dimensions advertised."
— Ben S.  · Verified Buyer · 5★

Our 8/4 boards are hand-selected by woodworkers, kiln-dried to a stable moisture content, and surfaced S2S — ready to work with the moment the box opens. No cupping, no mystery moisture, no wasted material on your most important builds.

Every question answered

Before You Order.

Do I need a planer or jointer for 8/4 lumber?
Our standard S2S boards have two flat faces already surfaced — you don't need a planer to flatten them. You will need to joint the edges before gluing up unless you choose our S4S upgrade, which delivers all 4 sides surfaced and your boards completely glue-up ready with no milling required.
How do I know 8/4 boards won't arrive cupped or twisted?
We kiln-dry all 8/4 lumber to a stable moisture content and hand-select every board for straightness before packing. Thick stock can move more than thin if not properly dried — ours is. If any board arrives with movement you're unhappy with, we replace it immediately. No questions asked.
What actual thickness is 8/4 — and what's the surfaced thickness?
8/4 rough is nominally 2" thick. After S2S surfacing it mills to approximately 1¾" finished thickness. This gives you more than enough material for thick table tops, bench seats, and structural legs without the weight and cost of going heavier.
What's the difference between 24" and 48" lengths for 8/4?
24" lengths are ideal for cutting board blanks, thick shelf components, and smaller furniture parts. 48" lengths give you full run lengths for table legs, aprons, and builds requiring long grain in thick stock. Both come in matched 5-board packs at the same quality standard.
What projects is 8/4 Black Walnut best suited for?
8/4 is ideal for builds that need mass and presence — dining table tops, thick bench seats, statement coffee tables, end grain cutting boards, table legs and aprons, live edge slabs, and any structural furniture element. If 4/4 feels too thin for your vision, 8/4 is the answer.
What does S2S mean — and what does S4S add?
S2S means Surfaced 2 Sides — both faces planed flat and to consistent thickness. You still need to joint the edges before gluing up panels. S4S adds the edges — all 4 sides surfaced, boards arrive completely glue-up ready. For 8/4 panel glue-ups, S4S saves significant time and effort.
What's the satisfaction guarantee exactly?
Simple: if you're not 100% happy, we replace it. Send us a photo, tell us what's wrong, and we ship a replacement immediately. Our 40% returning customer rate tells you this isn't just policy — it's how we operate every day.
Is free shipping really free on heavy 8/4 lumber?
Yes — no threshold, no surcharge, no fine print. 8/4 lumber is heavy and expensive to ship — we absorb that cost on every order across the US and Canada. 3–7 business days. Carefully packed to protect thick stock in transit. If anything arrives damaged, we replace it at no cost to you.

100% Satisfaction Guarantee

Don't love the wood — we replace it. No questions. No stress. No risk. We stand behind every board we ship, every single time.
