White Oak (RS)

(Quercus alba)

Heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with an olive cast. Paler sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Quarter sawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns Grain is straight, with a coarse, uneven texture.

Produces good results with hand and machine tools. Can react with iron (particularly when wet) and cause staining and discolouration. White oak is extremely durable against rot, and quite hard with a Janka hardness of 1350. Responds well to steam-bending. Glues, stains, and finishes well.

Common Uses: Cabinetry, furniture, interior trim, flooring, boatbuilding, barrels, and veneer.

Abundant availability in a good range of widths and thicknesses, both as flat sawn and quarter sawn lumber. Rift sawn is less available as there is more waste produced. Usually more expensive than red oak, and prices are moderate-high for a domestic hardwood in its premium cuts. Though thicker planks, quarter sawn, and rift sawn boards are more expensive.
