A sturdy 30"-tall plant stand that lifts a big pot up to the light, with a second shelf below for a smaller plant. The legs are ripped from thick 8/4 stock, the aprons are full-width boards, and the solid 14" square top takes a pot up to about 12" across. Pocket screws hold the frame, and the top is screwed on through slotted holes so it can move with the seasons.

Step-by-Step
- 1 Cut the legs and rails. Rip boards 1 and 2 down the middle — 4 strips, 1 15/16" wide. Use a push stick. Square one end of each strip and crosscut a 28¼" leg and a 8¼" rail from each. From the two board 1 strips, also cut a 8" top cleat.
- 2 Cut the top, shelf and aprons. Use a stop block for matching lengths. Board 3: three top pieces at 14". Board 4: one top piece at 14" and two shelf pieces at 11¾". Board 5: four aprons at 8¼", full width, and one more shelf piece at 11¾".
- 3 Glue up the top and shelf. Edge-glue the 4 top pieces into a 16" × 14" panel and the 3 shelf pieces into a 12" × 11¾" panel, long grain to long grain. Clamp with cauls and leave overnight.
- 4 Square up and sand. Scrape the glue and sand the seams flush. Rip about 1" off each outer edge so the top is 14" square. Sand every part 120 → 180 → 220 and ease the edges now — it is much easier before assembly.
- 5 Drill the pocket holes. Set a pocket-hole jig for 1½" stock. Drill 2 holes in each end of every apron and 1 in each end of every rail, all on the inside face. On the side aprons and rails, set the holes about ½" higher or lower than on the front and back ones, so the screws don't meet inside the legs.
- 6 Build the lower frame. Mark 8" up from the bottom of each leg. Join two legs with a rail, top edge on the marks, outside faces flush, using 2½" coarse-thread pocket screws — no glue on end grain. Make a second pair, then join the pairs with the other two rails. Turn every leg the same way, with its 1¾" face to the front. Check the frame is square.
- 7 Drop in the shelf. Cut a 1¾" × 1⅞" notch at each corner of the shelf — or set it on top of the legs, centred, and trace round them. Slide it down the legs onto the rails. From below, drive one #8 × 2½" screw up through the middle of each side rail into the shelf: ⅜" counterbore ½" deep, clearance hole, pilot hole.
- 8 Add the aprons and cleats. Pocket-screw the 4 aprons between the legs, top edges flush with the leg tops. Glue a cleat to the inside of each side apron, standing 1¾" tall, centred, top edges flush. Add 2 pre-drilled #8 × 3" screws through the cleat into the apron. The grain runs the same way, so this glue joint is long grain to long grain.
- 9 Attach the top. In each cleat drill 3 holes up: ⅜" counterbore ½" deep from below, then a clearance hole. Rock the drill front to back in the two outer holes to make ¼" slots. Centre the top upside down on a blanket, set the stand on it, drill pilots and drive #8 × 2½" screws. The slots let the top grow and shrink.
- 10 Finish. Wipe-on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats, on every face including the leg bottoms. Add felt or plastic glides. Always use a saucer under the pot.
- 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish 1¾" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
- 2 Cut the legs and rails. Rip boards 1 and 2 down the middle — 4 strips, 1 11/16" wide. Use a push stick. Square one end of each strip and crosscut a 28¼" leg and a 8¼" rail from each. From the two board 1 strips, also cut a 8" top cleat.
- 3 Cut the top, shelf and aprons. Use a stop block for matching lengths. Board 3: three top pieces at 14". Board 4: one top piece at 14" and two shelf pieces at 11¾". Board 5: four aprons at 8¼", full width, and one more shelf piece at 11¾".
- 4 Glue up the top and shelf. Edge-glue the 4 top pieces into a 14" × 14" panel and the 3 shelf pieces into a 10½" × 11¾" panel, long grain to long grain. Clamp with cauls and leave overnight.
- 5 Square up and sand. Scrape the glue and sand the seams flush. It is already 14" square. Sand every part 120 → 180 → 220 and ease the edges now — it is much easier before assembly.
- 6 Drill the pocket holes. Set a pocket-hole jig for 1½" stock. Drill 2 holes in each end of every apron and 1 in each end of every rail, all on the inside face. On the side aprons and rails, set the holes about ½" higher or lower than on the front and back ones, so the screws don't meet inside the legs.
- 7 Build the lower frame.
- 8 Drop in the shelf. Cut a 1¾" × 1⅛" notch at each corner of the shelf — or set it on top of the legs, centred, and trace round them. Slide it down the legs onto the rails. From below, drive one #8 × 2½" screw up through the middle of each side rail into the shelf: ⅜" counterbore ½" deep, clearance hole, pilot hole.
- 9 Add the aprons and cleats.

Centre the top upside down on a blanket, set the stand on it, drill pilots and drive #8 × 2½" screws. The slots let the top grow and shrink.
- 11 Finish. Wipe-on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats, on every face including the leg bottoms. Add felt or plastic glides. Always use a saucer under the pot.
Make It Yours
- Two-tone: walnut legs and aprons with a maple top and shelf.
- Slatted shelf: skip the shelf glue-up and leave ½" gaps between the 3 pieces, so water drains through.
- Outdoor stand: build it in white oak, use exterior screws and Titebond III, and finish with exterior oil or spar varnish.
Safety and Care
- Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
- Cut the short rails and aprons on a mitre saw with a stop block. Never cut short pieces against the table-saw fence.
- A tall stand with a heavy pot can tip if a child or pet climbs it. Keep heavy pots centred, and set the stand against a wall in a busy home.
- Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.
The top is 14" square, so a pot up to about 12" across sits safely. The shelf has about 14" of headroom for a smaller pot or a watering can.
A large pot of wet soil — 40 lb or so — is no problem on the top. Keep the weight centred and don't use the stand as a seat or a step.
Standing water stains wood and lifts the finish. Always use a saucer, wipe up spills, and give the top an extra coat of finish.
Planned offcuts only: about 10" off each board 2 strip, about 9" off board 4, and short end trims. Use them for coasters or a small pot riser. All 5 boards go into the stand.
No. The legs need the full length of a 4ft board. A 2ft 8/4 pack suits our chunky bookends or tealight logs instead.
