- Wood plugs (optional)
- Sandpaper 120 / 180 / 220
- Finish: wipe-on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly

- S2S only: jointer, straight-line rip jig or hand plane
Step-by-Step
- 1 Pick the faces. Boards 1–2 make shelf unit 1, boards 3–4 make unit 2, and board 5 gives all six uprights. Put the best face of each shelf up on the top shelf and down on the bottom shelf.
- 2 Cut the shelves. Square one end of boards 1–4 and crosscut each to 46".
- 3 Cut the uprights. Clamp a stop block at 7½" and crosscut board 5 into 6 uprights. Check each one for square — square ends keep the shelves parallel.
- 4 Sand before assembly. Sand every part 120 → 180 → 220. Inside corners are hard to reach once the unit is together.
- 5 Mark the shelves. On each shelf, mark upright positions 1" in from both ends and centred at 23". Draw the upright outline (¾" wide) so you can see where the screws go.
- 6 Drill the shelves. Drill 2 countersunk clearance holes inside each outline, about ¾" in from the front and back edges. Clamp a scrap underneath to stop tear-out.
- 7 Assemble the first unit. Stand the uprights on the bottom shelf. Pre-drill into each upright's end and drive #8 × 2" screws. Lay the top shelf on and repeat. Screws only — the uprights meet the shelves on end grain, which doesn't hold glue.
- 8 Check for square. Measure the diagonals before the last screws go tight. Repeat for the second unit.
- 9 Finish. Wipe-on oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats. Plug the screw holes first if you want a clean look.
- 10 Hang it. Find the studs. Screw 2 steel L-brackets into studs, set the unit on them, level it and screw up into the bottom shelf. Or fit 2 keyhole hangers in the back edge of the top shelf, lined up with studs.
- 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish ⅞" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
- 2 Pick the faces. Boards 1–2 make shelf unit 1, boards 3–4 make unit 2, and board 5 gives all six uprights. Put the best face of each shelf up on the top shelf and down on the bottom shelf.

Make It Yours
- Hidden screws: counterbore ⅜" and glue in wood plugs, then flush-cut and sand.
- Contrast uprights: cut the uprights from a darker board — walnut uprights on maple shelves.
- Staggered pair: hang the two units offset by 10–12" for a modern look over a desk or sofa.
Safety and Care
- Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
- Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
- Mount into wall studs (or rated anchors sized for the load). Check for wires and pipes before drilling.
- These are display shelves. Keep the load under about 15 lb per shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.
About 15 lb per shelf when the brackets are screwed into studs — plants, paperbacks, records and decor. It's too shallow for heavy hardcovers or dishes.
Small L-brackets under the bottom shelf are visible from below. If you want nothing showing, use keyhole hangers routed into the back edge of the top shelf instead.
Yes. Cut the uprights longer — board 5 has room for six uprights up to 7⅝".
Planned offcuts only: about 1" off the end of boards 1–4 and about 1½" off board 5. All 5 boards go into the shelves.
Yes. A 2ft pack makes two 22" units — a good size for a bathroom or entry. Cut the shelves at 22" and four uprights at 5½" from board 5, and use 2 uprights per unit, set in 1" from the ends.
