A heavy two-tier wine cradle for the counter or a sideboard. Six bottles lie in half-round notches: the body rests on a front rail, the neck on a back rail set a little lower, so the wine stays against the cork. The trick is drilling each notch on the seam between two clamped rails, so one hole saw cut makes a perfect matching pair. Screws and dowels hold it together — no tricky joinery.

Part Qty From S4S size S2S size
Body rails (3½" notches) 2 Boards 1–2 18" × 4" × 1¾" 18" × 3½" × 1¾"
Neck rails (1½" notches) 2 Boards 3–4 18" × 4" × 1¾" 18" × 3½" × 1¾"
End uprights 2 Board 5 11" × 4" × 1¾" 11" × 3½" × 1¾"

Notches: 3½" (body) and 1½" (neck) holes drilled on the seam of two clamped rails, three per pair, on 4½" centres.

Rails to uprights: rail face against the upright's edge, one #10 × 3" screw (counterbored and plugged) plus one glued ⅜" dowel per joint. No glue on the faces — cross grain.

Tilt: each neck rail sits ½" lower than its body rail, so the bottles lean slightly neck-down.

Finished size: S4S 18" W × 7½" D × 11" H · S2S 18" W × 7" D × 11" H. Holds six standard 750 ml bottles up to 3½" across.

S4S or S2S? S4S boards arrive flat and square on all four sides — cut and build. S2S boards have rough edges you straighten first. No jointer? Choose S4S.
Our sizing assumptions: ⅛" per saw cut · S4S boards 1¾" × 4", ¼" to square an end · S2S boards trimmed ½" each end and ¼" off each rough edge (3½" clean); we plan S2S at 1¾" thick · sizes drawn for the narrowest board in the pack. Wider boards give you a bigger offcut or a wider part — never a shortage.

Step-by-Step

✓
S4S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 4 sides — no jointing

  1. 1 Sort the boards. Boards 1–2 become the body rails at the front, boards 3–4 the neck rails at the back, board 5 the two end uprights. Put your best faces on boards 1–2 — they face the room.
  2. 2 Crosscut. Square one end of each board. Cut boards 1–4 to 18". Cut two uprights at 11" from board 5.
  3. 3 Mark the notches. Lay boards 1 and 2 flat, edge to edge, ends flush, best edges touching. Clamp them tight to the bench so they can't spread. Mark three centres on the seam at 4½", 9" and 13½" from the left end.
  4. 4 Drill the body notches. Centre a 3½" hole saw on each mark and drill halfway through the 1¾" thickness. Flip the pair, clamp again and finish from the other side so neither face tears out. One hole makes a matching half-round notch, 1¾" deep, in both rails.
  5. 5 Drill the neck notches. Clamp boards 3 and 4 the same way and drill three 1½" holes on the same centres with a Forstner bit or hole saw. Each neck notch is ¾" deep.
  6. 6 Sand. Smooth the notches with a drum sander or sandpaper wrapped on a can. Sand everything 120 → 180 → 220 and ease the edges. Glue-free joints mean you can sand all parts now.
  7. 7 Mark the uprights. Each upright stands with its 4" face to the side. The body rails screw to its front edge: the lower one ½" up from the bottom, the upper one flush with the top. The neck rails screw to its back edge, each ½" lower than its body rail: the lower one flush with the bottom, the upper one ½" below the top.
  8. 8 Screw and dowel the rails. Notches up, ends flush with the outside of the uprights. At each joint, drill a ⅜" counterbore and pilot through the rail into the upright edge and drive a #10 × 3" screw. Below it, drill a ⅜" hole 3" deep and glue in a ⅜" dowel. No glue on the rail faces — that joint is cross grain. Plug the counterbores and trim the dowels flush.
  9. 9 Finish. Wipe on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats. Add felt pads under the uprights and the lower neck rail, and line the notches with thin felt if you like.

S2S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 2 sides — straighten edges first

  1. 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish 1¾" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
  2. 2 Sort the boards. Boards 1–2 become the body rails at the front, boards 3–4 the neck rails at the back, board 5 the two end uprights. Put your best faces on boards 1–2 — they face the room.
  3. 3 Crosscut. Square one end of each board. Cut boards 1–4 to 18". Cut two uprights at 11" from board 5.
  4. 4 Mark the notches. Lay boards 1 and 2 flat, edge to edge, ends flush, best edges touching. Clamp them tight to the bench so they can't spread. Mark three centres on the seam at 4½", 9" and 13½" from the left end.
  5. 5 Drill the body notches. Centre a 3½" hole saw on each mark and drill halfway through the 1¾" thickness. Flip the pair, clamp again and finish from the other side so neither face tears out. One hole makes a matching half-round notch, 1¾" deep, in both rails.
  6. 6 Drill the neck notches. Clamp boards 3 and 4 the same way and drill three 1½" holes on the same centres with a Forstner bit or hole saw. Each neck notch is ¾" deep.
  7. 7 Sand. Smooth the notches with a drum sander or sandpaper wrapped on a can. Sand everything 120 → 180 → 220 and ease the edges. Glue-free joints mean you can sand all parts now.
  8. 8 Mark the uprights. Each upright stands with its 3½" face to the side. The body rails screw to its front edge: the lower one ½" up from the bottom, the upper one flush with the top. The neck rails screw to its back edge, each ½" lower than its body rail: the lower one flush with the bottom, the upper one ½" below the top.
  9. 9 Screw and dowel the rails.
  10. 10 Finish. Wipe on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly, 2–3 coats. Add felt pads under the uprights and the lower neck rail, and line the notches with thin felt if you like.
Why drill on the seam? Two rails clamped edge to edge share one hole. Each rail gets exactly half, so the front and back notches can never be out of line.
Why is the neck rail lower? A bottle stored on its side keeps the wine touching the cork, so the cork stays moist and doesn't shrink. The ½" drop tips each bottle just slightly neck-down.
Why screws and dowels, not glue? The rails run side to side and the uprights run up and down. Glue across that grain can crack as the wood moves. A screw and a dowel at each joint hold it tight without fighting the wood.

Make It Yours

  • Label rail: brush chalkboard paint on the front face of the lower body rail and write the vintage under each bottle.
  • Glass rack: rout two ⅝" slots in a spare board and screw it under a shelf for stemware.
  • Two-tone: walnut body rails on maple uprights.

Safety and Care

  • Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
  • Clamp the rails firmly before you drill. A big hole saw grabs hard — use a drill press or a drill with a side handle, low speed, and back out often to clear chips.
  • Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
  • Set the cradle on a level, solid surface. A full cradle weighs over 20 lb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.

Standard Bordeaux, Burgundy and most sparkling bottles are 3"–3½" across and sit in the 3½" notches. Very fat bottles (some champagne magnums) won't fit.

Yes. Clamp the rails and a scrap backer board to the bench, use a drill with a side handle, and run it slowly. Drill halfway from each side.

Yes. The bottles sit over the uprights and the base is 7½" deep. Fill the bottom tier first if you're only storing three.

Planned offcuts only: the end trim and about 5¼" off the end of boards 1–4 (S4S) or 5" (S2S), and about 1" of board 5. Those short pieces make coasters or a bottle-opener block. All 5 boards go into the cradle.

Yes. A 4ft pack makes two cradles: crosscut every board in half first, then follow this plan twice.
