Big, solid hardwood hooks for coats, bags and backpacks. Each one is a single 9" block of 8/4 with a rounded hook cut into the bottom, screwed straight into a stud through two plugged holes. Every board makes two hooks, so one pack gives you ten — a row for the front hall and a few for the mudroom or the closet door.

S4S or S2S? S4S boards arrive flat and square on all four sides — cut and build. S2S boards have rough edges you straighten first. No jointer? Choose S4S.
Our sizing assumptions: ⅛" per saw cut · S4S boards 1¾" × 4", ¼" to square an end · S2S boards trimmed ½" each end and ¼" off each rough edge (3½" clean); we plan S2S at 1¾" thick · sizes drawn for the narrowest board in the pack. Wider boards give you a bigger offcut or a wider part — never a shortage.

Step-by-Step

✓
S4S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 4 sides — no jointing

  1. 1 Crosscut the blocks. Square one end of each board. Clamp a stop block at 9" and cut two blocks from every board — 10 blocks, each 9" × 4" × 1¾".
  2. 2 Make a template. Draw the hook on a scrap of card or hardboard, 9" tall and 4" wide. The back (spine) is 1¼" thick and runs the full height. At the bottom, the tip is 1" thick and rises 3½" from the bottom end. Between them is a 1¾" throat with a round bottom 2" above the end. Round the top of the tip and the outside bottom corner.
  3. 3 Trace every block. Lay the template on the 9" × 4" face with the spine on the back edge. The grain runs up and down the hook, which is why the bottom stays a solid 2".
  4. 4 Drill the throat. Clamp the block on edge and drill a 1¾" Forstner hole right through the 1¾" thickness, centred 2⅛" from the back edge and 2⅞" up from the bottom end. Drill from both sides to meet in the middle so the exit doesn't tear out.
  5. 5 Saw the waste. On the bandsaw or with a jigsaw, cut down the front of the spine from the top end to the hole. Then cut in from the front edge along the top of the tip, and down the inside of the tip to the hole. The waste block drops out. Saw the rounded corners last, just outside the line.
  6. 6 Sand the curves. Sand to the line with a spindle sander, a drum in the drill or sandpaper wrapped round a dowel. Round every edge about ⅛". Then 120 → 180 → 220 grit.
  7. 7 Drill the mounting holes. Mark two holes on the spine's front face, centred across the 1¾" width, at 5" and 7¾" up from the bottom. Drill a ⅜" counterbore ⅜" deep, then a clearance hole for a #10 screw straight through to the back.
  8. 8 Finish. Wipe on oil or hardwax oil, two coats. Cut ⅜" face-grain plugs from an offcut with a plug cutter, or buy them, and keep them with the hooks.
  9. 9 Hang them. Find a stud. Hold the hook level, drill a pilot hole through each clearance hole into the stud and drive two #10 × 3" screws. Glue in the plugs, flush-cut them and touch up the finish. No stud? Use rated anchors sized for at least 15 lb.

S2S Lumber Pack
Surfaced 2 sides — straighten edges first

  1. 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish 1¾" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
  2. 2 Crosscut the blocks. Square one end of each board. Clamp a stop block at 9" and cut two blocks from every board — 10 blocks, each 9" × 3½" × 1¾".
  3. 3 Make a template. Draw the hook on a scrap of card or hardboard, 9" tall and 3½" wide. The back (spine) is 1¼" thick and runs the full height. At the bottom, the tip is 1" thick and rises 3½" from the bottom end. Between them is a 1¼" throat with a round bottom 2" above the end. Round the top of the tip and the outside bottom corner.
  4. 4 Trace every block. Lay the template on the 9" × 3½" face with the spine on the back edge. The grain runs up and down the hook, which is why the bottom stays a solid 2".
  5. 5 Drill the throat. Clamp the block on edge and drill a 1¼" Forstner hole right through the 1¾" thickness, centred 1⅞" from the back edge and 2⅝" up from the bottom end. Drill from both sides to meet in the middle so the exit doesn't tear out.
  6. 6 Saw the waste. On the bandsaw or with a jigsaw, cut down the front of the spine from the top end to the hole. Then cut in from the front edge along the top of the tip, and down the inside of the tip to the hole. The waste block drops out. Saw the rounded corners last, just outside the line.
  7. 7 Sand the curves. Sand to the line with a spindle sander, a drum in the drill or sandpaper wrapped round a dowel. Round every edge about ⅛". Then 120 → 180 → 220 grit.
  8. 8 Drill the mounting holes. Mark two holes on the spine's front face, centred across the 1¾" width, at 5" and 7¾" up from the bottom. Drill a ⅜" counterbore ⅜" deep, then a clearance hole for a #10 screw straight through to the back.
  9. 9 Finish. Wipe on oil or hardwax oil, two coats. Cut ⅜" face-grain plugs from an offcut with a plug cutter, or buy them, and keep them with the hooks.
  10. 10 Hang them. Find a stud. Hold the hook level, drill a pilot hole through each clearance hole into the stud and drive two #10 × 3" screws. Glue in the plugs, flush-cut them and touch up the finish. No stud? Use rated anchors sized for at least 15 lb.
Why drill the throat first? A Forstner hole gives the hook a perfectly round bottom in seconds. A coat loop or bag strap settles into the curve and can't slide out. Sawing into a hole is also far easier than steering a blade round a tight corner.
Why keep the bottom 2" thick? The grain runs up and down the hook, so the bottom is the weakest spot. Leaving 2" of wood under the throat and rounding the outside corner keeps it strong enough for a heavy winter coat.
Why screw into a stud? A loaded hook pulls out at the top screw. Two #10 screws in a stud hold far more than 15 lb. Drywall alone would let go.
Why pre-drill? Maple, oak and hickory split if you drive a screw without a pilot hole. Pre-drill every screw and countersink so the heads sit flush.

Make It Yours

  • Mixed species: alternate walnut and maple hooks along one wall.
  • Double hook: cut a second, smaller throat near the top of the spine for a hat or keys.
  • Hook rail: screw five hooks to a 4/4 board, then screw the board into two studs so the hooks can go anywhere along it.

Safety and Care

  • Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
  • Clamp the block when drilling the throat — a big Forstner bit grabs. Cut short blocks with a stop block and keep your hands 6" from the blade.
  • Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
  • Mount into wall studs (or rated anchors sized for the load). Check for wires and pipes before drilling.
  • Each hook is made for about 15 lb: coats, bags and backpacks. Don't hang from them or use them for bikes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.

Studs are usually 16" apart, so one hook per stud is the easy route. For hooks 6–8" apart, use rated anchors between the studs, or mount them on a hook rail (see Make It Yours).

No. The tip only stops the loop from sliding off; the weight sits in the round bottom of the throat, right over the 2" solid bottom. Keep the load to about 15 lb per hook.

No. A jigsaw with a sharp, fine blade cuts 1¾" hardwood fine. Go slowly, let the blade do the work, and clamp the block to the bench.

Planned offcuts only: the end trim and about 5" (S4S) or 4¾" (S2S) at the end of each board, plus the waste from each throat. Use the end pieces to cut your own plugs. All 5 boards go into the hooks.

Yes. A 4ft pack makes 20 hooks: cut four blocks from each board instead of two.
