A solid hardwood desk with a 22"-deep top — room for a laptop, a monitor and your elbows. Four wide 8/4 boards edge-glue into a 44" × 22" top that sits on steel hairpin legs. The fifth board becomes a 40" riser shelf that lifts your monitor and keeps books and chargers off the work surface.

Why S2S only? The 6–8" wide 8/4 boards come S2S: both faces planed, edges rough. Plan on losing about ¼" per edge when you straighten them.
Our sizing assumptions: ⅛" per saw cut · 6–8" wide 8/4 S2S boards trimmed ½" each end and ¼" off each rough edge (5½" clean at the narrowest), planned at 1¾" thick · sizes drawn for the narrowest board in the pack. Wider boards give you a bigger offcut or a wider part — never a shortage.

Step-by-Step

2
S2S Lumber Pack (6–8" wide)
Surfaced 2 sides — straighten edges first

  1. 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance).
  2. 2 Crosscut the boards. Square one end of each board. Cut boards 1–4 at 44" for the desk top. From board 5, cut the riser shelf at 40", then two foot blocks at 3".
  3. 3 Arrange the top. Lay the four long pieces side by side, best faces up. Flip them end for end until the grain and colour flow across the seams. Mark the set with a chalk triangle so it goes back together the same way.
  4. 4 Joint the mating edges. Every edge that meets another must be dead straight. Dry-clamp the top: no light should show along any seam.
  5. 5 Glue up in two stages. Glue the pieces into two pairs first, then glue the pairs together the next day. Four pieces at once is a lot to manage alone. Every joint is long grain to long grain. Use cauls at the ends to keep the faces level and clamp every 8", alternating over and under. The finished top is 44" × 22".
  6. 6 Flatten the top. Scrape off the dried glue. At 22" wide the top won't fit most planers, so flatten it with a router sled, a hand plane or a belt sander. Or take it to a cabinet shop and pay for a pass through their wide-belt sander. Check with a straightedge in every direction.
  7. 7 Square and shape. Trim both ends square with a track saw, or a circular saw against a clamped straightedge. Round the front edge well — your wrists rest on it all day. Soften the corners.
  8. 8 Build the riser. Lay the foot blocks flat under each end of the shelf, flush with the ends and the back edge. Turn each block so its grain runs the same way as the shelf — then the glue joint is long grain to long grain. Glue and clamp, then drive two pre-drilled, countersunk #10 × 2½" screws up through each block into the shelf. The riser stands 3½" tall.
  9. 9 Sand. Sand the top and the riser 80 → 120 → 180 → 220. Wipe off the dust between grits.
  10. 10 Finish all faces. Apply hardwax oil or water-based poly to the top, bottom and edges of the desk equally. A top finished on one side only will cup. Finish the riser the same way.
  11. 11 Attach the legs. Flip the top onto a blanket. Set each hairpin plate 1" in from both edges, rods angled out toward the corner. Pre-drill, then drive #12 × 1" pan-head screws. Use 28" 3-rod legs. Stand the desk up, add leg caps, and set the riser along the back edge. Leave it loose so the top can move.
Why 3-rod legs? A desk gets pushed every time you type or lean on it. Two-rod hairpins flex and the desk wobbles. The third rod stiffens each leg, so the top stays put.
Does wood movement matter? Yes. The 22" top grows and shrinks about 3/16" across its width through the year. Each hairpin plate is only about 4" across, so it moves with the wood. Leave the riser loose rather than screwing it down across the grain.
Why finish the underside? Wood takes in and gives off moisture through every bare face. Finish the top and bottom the same and the top stays flat.

Make It Yours

  • Taller riser: stand the foot blocks on edge instead of flat for a 7¼" riser — room to slide a keyboard underneath.
  • Cable grommet: drill a 2" hole with a hole saw about 3" in from the back edge, centred on the desk, and press in a desk grommet. The riser shelf hides it and the cables drop straight through.
  • Standing height: a 1¾" top on 40" legs suits most people standing. Use 3-rod legs and keep the load light.

Safety and Care

  • Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
  • Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
  • Use screws no longer than 1" in the leg plates so they can't break through a top flattened to 1½".
  • This is a desk for a laptop, a monitor and your arms. Don't sit or stand on it.
  • Wear a dust mask when cutting and sanding, especially exotics (padauk, purpleheart, sapele).

Frequently Asked Questions

The 6–8" wide 8/4 pack comes S2S (faces planed, edges rough). Straighten the edges with a jointer, a table saw and a straight-line jig, a track saw, or a hand plane.

Top thickness plus leg height. A 1¾" top on 28" legs gives about 29¾", standard desk height. If you flatten the top to 1½", it is about 29½". Shorter people may prefer 26" legs.

Use a router sled — two straight rails and a router riding on a carriage — or a hand plane and a straightedge. Many cabinet shops will run a top through a wide-belt sander for a small fee. A careful glue-up with cauls leaves much less to flatten.

Yes. The riser is 1¾" hardwood on short blocks and won't sag under a monitor or a stack of books. Keep heavy loads near the legs and never sit on the desk.

Planned offcuts only: about 3" off the end of boards 1–4 and about ½" off board 5. All 5 boards go into the desk and riser.

A 2ft wide pack is too short for the desk. It makes our Floating Nightstand Shelf or Hairpin Plant Stools instead.
