Gallery Ledge Shelf[4/4 · 2ft · 5-Pack]
One pack. One build. All 5 boards used. • Makes 2 ledges
*Exotic — not available for shipment to US customers.
A short picture ledge for the spots a long shelf won't fit: a hallway, a bathroom, beside a door, or low down as a book ledge for a kid's room. Each ledge is three simple parts: a bottom, a back that covers the bottom's rear edge, and a front lip to stop frames sliding off. One 2ft pack makes two.

Before You Start
Shopping List
- 1 lumber pack — 4/4 · 2ft (S4S or S2S)
- Wood glue (Titebond II or III)
- 8 × #8 flat-head screws: 1¼" (S4S) or 1½" (S2S)
- 6 × #10 × 2½" screws + 2 rated wall anchors for hanging
- Sandpaper 120 / 180 / 220
- Finish: wipe-on oil, hardwax oil or water-based poly
Tools
- Saw for crosscuts (mitre saw or circular saw with a speed square)
- Saw for rips (table saw, or circular/track saw with a guide)
- Drill/driver, countersink bit, pilot bits
- 3–4 bar clamps, 6" or longer
- Stud finder and level
- Random-orbit sander or sanding block
- S2S only: jointer, straight-line rip jig or hand plane
Step-by-Step
- 1 Sort the boards. Boards 1 and 3 are the bottoms, boards 2 and 4 are the backs, board 5 makes the front lips. Put the best faces on the backs and the tops of the bottoms.
- 2 Cut to length. Square one end of boards 1–4, then cut each to 22". Clamp a stop block so all four match.
- 3 Rip the lips. Rip two 1¼" strips off board 5 with a push stick, then cut both to 22". The leftover strip is a spare lip.
- 4 Sand. Sand every part 120 → 180 grit before assembly. Ease the top edge of each lip and the top corners of each back.
- 5 Attach the back. Stand a back behind a bottom so it covers the bottom's rear edge, bottoms flush. Glue the edge, clamp, and drive #8 × 1¼" screws through the back into the bottom, one every 6". Pre-drill and countersink each one.
- 6 Glue on the lip. Glue a lip on edge along the front of the bottom, flush with the front edge. It stands 1¼" tall and stops frames sliding off. Clamp or tape it until dry. All three parts run grain the same way, so wood movement is not an issue.
- 7 Repeat. Build the second shelf the same way. Let the glue cure overnight.
- 8 Finish. Final sand at 220 grit, then 2–3 coats of wipe-on oil or water-based poly.
- 9 Hang it. Find the studs. They sit 16" apart, so a 22" ledge reaches two if you centre it over a stud bay. Level the ledge and drive one #10 × 2½" screw through the back into each stud, plus a third in the middle with a rated anchor. Pre-drill the back first.
- 1 Prep the boards. Trim ½" off each end to remove any end checks. Joint one edge straight, then rip the other edge parallel (¼" off each rough edge is our planning allowance). S2S boards finish ⅞" thick, so screws and some sizes change — use the sizes in this column.
- 2 Sort the boards. Boards 1 and 3 are the bottoms, boards 2 and 4 are the backs, board 5 makes the front lips. Put the best faces on the backs and the tops of the bottoms.
- 3 Cut to length. Square one end of boards 1–4, then cut each to 22". Clamp a stop block so all four match.
- 4 Rip the lips. Rip two 1¼" strips off board 5 with a push stick, then cut both to 22".

- 7 Glue on the lip. Glue a lip on edge along the front of the bottom, flush with the front edge. It stands 1¼" tall and stops frames sliding off. Clamp or tape it until dry. All three parts run grain the same way, so wood movement is not an issue.

- 10 Hang it. Find the studs. They sit 16" apart, so a 22" ledge reaches two if you centre it over a stud bay. Level the ledge and drive one #10 × 2½" screw through the back into each stud, plus a third in the middle with a rated anchor. Pre-drill the back first.
Make It Yours
- Picture groove: rout a ¼" groove along the top of the bottom, just behind the lip. Frames sit in it and can't slide forward.
- Kids' book ledge: hang it at 24–30" so books face out at their eye level.
- Two-tone: walnut ledge with a maple lip.
Safety and Care
- Wear eye and hearing protection. Use a push stick for every rip under 4" wide.
- Rip the 1¼" lips with a push stick or on a bandsaw — never hold a narrow strip by hand near the blade.
- Pre-drill every screw — hardwoods split without a pilot hole.
- Mount into wall studs (or rated anchors sized for the load). Check for wires and pipes before drilling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not for S4S boards — they arrive flat and square on all four sides. S2S boards need their edges straightened: a jointer, a table saw with a straight-line jig, or a hand plane all work. No jointer? Choose the S4S pack.
Plenty for framed photos, small plants or a row of books, about 15 lb spread along the ledge when two screws are in studs. Don't use it as a coat hook or a step.
Use the studs if you can. If you can't hit two, use three rated anchors sized for the load and keep the weight light.
The lip stands 1¼" above the shelf, which holds most frames. For thin frames on a busy wall, add the picture groove from Make It Yours.
Planned offcuts only: about 1" off the end of each board and a thin strip from board 5 (on S4S it's a full spare lip). All 5 boards go into the ledges.
Yes. With a 4ft pack you get two long 46" ledges instead — we have a separate plan for that, with the same three parts.
